Be Careful When You Wash Your Hair

erick larregui u LUSLLgNmk unsplashThe way in which you wash your hair and how frequently you do so plays a big part in how long your hair colour will last. Firstly, we recommend that you do not wash your hair for at least 24 hours after your hair colour appointment. This will allow the hair colour time to settle into your hair.

If possible, you should ideally wait 72 hours before washing your hair after having your hair coloured (but we understand this may feel like a long time, especially if you've been to the gym!)   If you can hold off, however, this will allow your hair cuticle the three full days it ideally needs to reseal itself after the hair colouring process.  Once it is sealed the colour is more firmly established inside your hair so you won't wash any of it away so easily.

Think carefully about how frequently you wash your hair after this, as the more you do so, the more your hair colour will fade. If you currently wash your hair every day, try washing it every other day!

When you wash your hair, we recommend applying the shampoo to the roots of your hair only, as this is where the oil and dirt builds up.  Applying shampoo shampoo to the lengths of your hair can strip the colour away, especially if you aren't using specialist colour protection products.

When it comes to conditioning your hair, focus on the mid-lengths to ends of your hair as this is where the damage tends to be. Avoid the roots to prevent your hair looking greasy too quickly (and thus having to be washed again!)

Use The Right Products For Colour-Treated Hair

Prevent hair colour fade advice from Cheshire hairdressersWhen choosing shampoo and conditioner, it's important to use the right products for colour-treated hair.  It's a false economy to use cheap brands with harsh chemicals.  Instead, we recommend you protect your investment in your hair colour by choosing professional salon quality products.

In particular, look out for sulphate-free hair products, which are gentler on the hair.  Speak to your Terence Paul colourist who can recommend the best Wella products for your hair.   As well as using the correct shampoo you should also use a good quality conditioner or hair mask as the colouring process can leave your hair dry, which can make it become brittle and look dull.

If you feel that your hair colour has faded and need a top-up, you can refresh your hair colour with a shampoo specifically for your hair colour. For example, remove brassy tones from blonde hair with a purple shampoo, such as the new Wella System Professional Luxe Blonde shampoo.

Protect Your Hair From Heat Damage and the Sun

Protect Hair Colour From Sun Damage Wella Hair Salon AdviceWe all know that heated styling tools can damage our hair if  used without protection, and the same applies to UV rays and heat from the sun.  The sun's rays can break down chemical bonds in the hair which can result in your hair becoming dull, brittle and dry and your colour looking faded. Protect your hair from the sun by wearing a hat or apply an SPF for the hair, such as Wella Invigo.  The range includes product which will protect and repair coloured hair before, during and after sun exposure.

Meanwhile, if you want to use heated styling tools on your hair (and it's best avoided if possible!), always make sure you use heat protection, such as Wella EIMI.  Speak to your stylist for advice on the best product to use.
